Assassin’s Mission Excerpt

I sighed when the chirping noise of my phone interrupted the peacefulness of the field. I looked at the screen, rolled my eyes, and swiped to answer. “Hello.”

“Elora?” A voice came through the phone, low and gruff. “Is this Elora?”

“Depends on who’s asking.” I stood up from the ground, brushing off the dirt from my bum.

“I’d prefer to keep my name between you and me. And we both know that cell phones aren’t the safest way of speaking.” He paused as if waiting for me to respond. When I didn’t say a word, he continued. “Can we meet? Say, the cafe on the corner of Edgemont and Brown?”

I thought about it for a minute. Taking another assignment this soon after completing one was risky. “Sure, we can meet. No promises though.”

“Tonight, 8?” His quick response had me raising my eyebrows.

“Sure.”
