Gabriella watched as Greyson’s eyes fell on her and a smile erupted on his face. She waved at him from her place on the bench and he bounded over to her, plopping down on the bench next to her. “Here ya go!” He handed her a coney dog and she caught sight of a shape on his wrist.
“Wait a minute!” she took the hot dog and put it down on the table before grabbing his arm. “Did you—”
“Sure did! Was gonna tell you about it,” he took a bite of his chili dog, “just hadn’t gotten to it yet.” He mumbled the last part through a mouthful of food, and she smacked his shoulder. “It showed up around noon, I wanted to tell you in person.” He bumped against her shoulder, and she smiled at him.
“Well, you gonna show me it or you gonna leave me hangin’?” she laughed, taking a bite of her own food. The taste of the chili flooded her mouth and she felt like she had been sent to food heaven. Oh, how she loved chili coneys. Greyson set his food down on the spot beside him and pulled his sleeve up to show off the Mark that had appeared on his skin. Gabbi traced the lines with her index finger. “It’s beautiful,” she said, “it almost matches our Friendship one.” She pulled up her left sleeve, showing off the crescent moon shape that had appeared on her wrist when she was five. They had met shortly after, when her parents had taken her to the park, and she fell off the slide. Greyson had been the one to run over and check to make sure she was alright, and they realized they had matching marks. They’d been inseparable ever since.
The lines she was tracing now were in the shape of a star, but the inside had a galaxy swirl look to it. She looked up into Greyson’s eyes and smiled. “I can’t wait for mine to appear.” He smiled back and they ate their food in silence, Gabbi’s thoughts having taken a turn. It was rare for those who shared Friendship marks to also share Soulmate marks. But it had happened before and her and Greyson believed they would be one of the exceptions. Their relationship was secret, as it was against the law for anyone to date before the age of seventeen, when the Marks on the right wrist appeared, and even then, you were only allowed to be with your Marked. To Gabbi, this seemed barbaric, but it was the way of life after the War of Loyalties, which caused the loss of half the population and thus causing the alteration to the human race.
